It is important that your car gets the best possible care - always - even between services. Here are some tips on how you can contribute to the care of your Volkswagen, in between services, and help to keep your Volkswagen running in peak form for longer.

"Running-in" Your Car

  • Do not use full throttle.
  • Do not drive faster than 3/4 of top speed.
  • Avoid high engine speeds.
  • Trailer towing should, if possible, be avoided.
  • New tyres must also be run in for 300 km because they do not have maximum adhesion at the start.
  • New brake linings must also be run in and do not have the optimum friction properties during the first 200 km.
  • The speed can gradually be increased to road or engine maximum.
  • Do not over rev the engine when cold, either in neutral or in gear.
  • Do not drive with the engine speed unnecessarily high. Changing up early helps to save fuel, reduces noise and protects the environment.

On vehicles with a rev counter, the maximum permissible engine speed is shown by the beginning of the red zone on the rev counter scale. The needle of the counter must not move into this zone.

Child Safety

  • Children under 12 years of age should travel on the back seats.
  • They must be protected with either a child restraint system or the seat belts provided, depending on their age, height and weight.
  • The child restraint system should be installed in the centre of the rear seat or behind the front passenger's seat.
  • Backwards-facing child safety seats must not be installed on the front passenger's seat in a vehicle equipped with a front passenger's airbag.
  • When using child safety seats of the type where the child sits facing the direction of travel, the front passenger's seat must be moved back as far as it will go.
  • The diagonal part of the belt of a safety seat must run roughly over the centre of the shoulder (never across the neck), and fit closely against the upper part of the body.
  • The lap part of the belt must fit across the child's hips, and not over the abdomen.
  • Particular caution is advised when installing child restraint systems using the same mounting bolts as the existing car seat belts. The bolts must bear over the complete length of the threads and must be tightened with a torque of 50 Nm. (You can have this checked at your Dealer).
  • Check that the seat belts are positioned properly.
  • Also ensure that there is no risk of the belt webbing being damaged by any sharp-edged fittings.
  • Never allow two children to share the same restraint system.
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions and observe any statutory requirements when installing and using child restraint systems.
  • We recommend using child restraint systems from the range of genuine Volkswagen accessories.

Tyre Condition

  • After running them in, check tyres for damage from time to time and remove any foreign bodies embedded in the treads.
  • To avoid damage to tyres and wheels, drive over curbs and similar obstacles very slowly and as nearly at right angles as possible.
  • Damage to wheels and tyres is not always easy to see, so if you think that a wheel is damaged, have it checked by a Volkswagen Dealer.
  • Keep grease, oil and fuel off tyres.
  • Replace missing dust caps as soon as possible.
  • Mark wheels before taking them off so that they rotate in the same direction when put back on again.
  • When taken off, the tyres should be stored in a cool, dry and preferably dark place. Tyres not on wheels should be stored in a vertical position.

Tyre life depends to a considerable extent on the following factors:

  • Pressures should be checked at least twice a month and before every long journey. On the temporary spare the pressure is shown on the sidewall.
  • The spare wheel with the normal tyre should always be inflated to the highest pressure required on the vehicle.
  • Always check the pressures when the tyres are cold. Pressures which are too high or low shorten tyre life - quite apart from the detrimental influence on vehicle handling.
  • Mode of driving - fast cornering, hard acceleration and violent braking - also increase tyre wear.
  • The wheels on new vehicles are balanced. However, when the vehicle is running various influences can cause the wheels to become unbalanced and this causes steering vibration. The wheels should be balanced again.
  • Incorrect wheel alignment not only causes excessive, usually uneven tyre wear but can also impair the car's safe handling.
  • When tread depth is down to 1 mm measured in the tread groove next to the wear indicator bar, the official permissible minimum tread depth has been reached.

Engine Oil Level

Engine Oil Level

  • Special high-quality multi-grade oil is put in at the factory. Always use suitable high-quality oil when topping up or changing the engine oil.
  • Oil additives are not permitted.

Checking the oil level

  • Oil levels must be checked at regular intervals, preferably when filling the tank and before a long journey.
  • The vehicle must be on a level surface when checking the oil level.
  • Then pull the dipstick out, wipe it with a clean cloth and insert again.
  • Pull the dipstick out again and check the oil level using the markings on the dipstick as an indicator:
  • If oil is at the lowest level, oil must be topped-up. Afterwards it suffices when oil level is somewhere in between the lowest and middle level.
  • If oil is at mid-level, oil can be topped up.
  • But never let the oil level go beyond that of the highest marking on the dipstick.

Topping up the engine oil

  • Unscrew the cap from oil filler opening in the cylinder head cover and pour oil in 0,5 litres at a time.
  • Then check the level with the dipstick.
  • On no account must the oil level be above the highest marking on the dipstick.
  • When topping up the oil, do not spill it onto hot engine components. There is a danger of causing a fire.
  • Carefully close the filler cap and push the oil dipstick in as far as possible.

Coolant Level

Coolant

  • The concentration of the coolant with water must not be reduced in summer or warm countries.
  • The coolant additive proportion must be at least 40%.
  • Only the Volkswagen coolant additive, G 12 A8D, may be used (available from Volkswagen Dealers).

Checking coolant level

  • The expansion tank is in the engine compartment on the bulkhead.
  • The level can only be checked properly when the engine is not running.
  • The level must be between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks on the expansion tank when engine is cold and can be slightly above the "MAX" mark when it is warm.
  • On vehicles with an automatic coolant level checking device, the warning lamp flashes continuously if the level is too low.
  • Coolant loss normally indicates leaks in the system, therefore it should be checked by a Dealer.
  • In a sealed system losses only occur if the boiling point of the coolant is exceeded as a result of overheating.

Topping up the coolant

  • Switch the engine off and let it cool down.
  • Cover the expansion cap with a cloth and turn it carefully to the left and remove.
  • Do not remove expansion cap when engine is hot. If a lot of coolant has been lost, only add cold coolant after the engine has cooled down.
  • Do not fill above the "MAX" mark.
  • Screw the cap on again, tightly.

Brake Fluid

Brake Fluid

  • The brake fluid reservoir is on the right in the engine compartment.
  • The fluid level must always be between the "MAX" and the "MIN" marks.

Refilling the brake fluid

  • Brake fluid must be refilled every two years.
  • Only use genuine, new fluid.
  • Changing the fluid should be done by a Volkswagen Dealer.

Safety Tips

Making sure that your Volkswagen is one of the safest cars for you to drive is our responsibility. And we take this very seriously. However, as a driver, you too have a certain responsibility to yourself and your passengers to ensure that they are kept safe at all times.

To help you do this, Arrive Alive has compiled a list of Safety Tips which, if adhered to, will guarantee you peace of mind and a safe and comfortable arrival at your final destination. Find these important tips at www.arrivealive.co.za

Wiper Bladess

Wiper blades should be cleaned regularly with window cleaning solution and a soft sponge or cloth. They should be changed once or twice a year.

Changing the wiper blades

To take them off:

  • Hinge the wiper arm up and position the blade horizontally.
  • Press the retaining spring and push the blade towards the screen at the same time.

Securing the new wiper blades:

  • The retaining spring must engage audibly in the wiper arm.
  • When fitting wiper blades with moulded wind deflectors, one should ensure that the deflector is pointing downwards.

DIY Tips

Fuses

The panel with the relays and fuses is in the front foot well behind a cover. It is advisable to always carry a few spare fuses in the vehicle. To change a fuse:

  • Switch off the component concerned.
  • Remove cover. To do this press both buttons in, pull front of cover down in direction of arrow and take off.
  • With the aid of the list of fuses, determine which fuse belongs to the component that has failed.
  • Pull out the fuse concerned.
  • Replace blown fuse (can be recognised by the burnt metal strip) with a fuse of the same amperage.
  • Insert the four lugs on the rear of the cover into the trim and fold upwards until it engages securely.

On no account should fuses be patched up because this can cause serious damage elsewhere in the electrical system.

Changing Bulbs

  • Switch off the light concerned.
  • Do not touch the glass part of the new bulb with bare fingers.
  • Always use the same type of bulb.
  • It is advisable to always carry a box of spare bulbs in your car including the following:
    • 12V 60/55W Headlight (H4)
    • 12V 55W Headlight
    • 12V 21W Turn signal
    • 12V 21/5W Brake and tail light
    • 12V 5W Tail light additional
    • 12V 4W Side Light
    • 12V 5W Number plate light, Glass base

Tools

The vehicle tools are in a well under the floor covering of the luggage compartment. The tool kit includes:

  • Tool box.
  • Towing eye.
  • Open end spanner.
  • Jack.
  • Wheel spanner.
  • Screw driver with box spanner in handle for wheel bolts.

Spare Wheel

The vehicle is equipped with a temporary spare wheel:

  • This wheel not only takes up less space in the boot than a normal spare wheel, it is also considerably lighter.
  • The pressure (4.2 bar) must be checked regularly so that the wheel is always ready for use.
  • The wheel is located in the well under the floor covering in the boot and is secured with a plastic nut.
